Why do organic and biodynamic products cost more than the “normal” ones?

Although the costs associated with sustainable farming do impact on the price of the end-product, there are quite a few surprises.


Anyone who chooses to eat organic and biodynamic foods is choosing the path of wellbeing and flavour and always in harmony with nature’s timetable and resources.
Organic products, cultivated using only natural substances, are the fruits of strictly controlled and sustainable farming practices: the result is the kind of foods that become a way of life and a conscious, well-informed selection that is made on a day to day basis.

Precisely because of this, the cultivation of these products requires specific and more demanding techniques. It takes more human commitment, such as leaving fields fallow to rest, rotating crops and utilising suitable alternatives to chemical fertilisers. These factors, which are specific to non-intensive farming (which aims to enrich the soil instead of exploiting it excessively), lead to lower yields requiring greater attention to quality precisely because no chemical treatments whatsoever are utilised.

At first glance it may well seem that organic products cost more than the “normal” ones, but are we really sure that this is the case? Even in the case of mass retail chains there are price variations depending on the type of product, very often with considerable differences in price due to branding and advertising.

The cost of organic products also includes the assurance of a safe and certified top-quality foodstuff produced in an environmentally friendly and labour conscious manner from farm to table. Choosing to buy organic means far more than simply “doing the shopping”. The knowledge that you are doing the right thing for yourself and for the environment is not only priceless but it also certainly tastes very good indeed.
